Master's Degree in Data Science

[March 3, 2021 - Dr. Marco Quartulli] Visual Interaction and Communication in Data Science

Watch the lecture on the YouTube channel of the master.

Speaker: Marco Quartulli - Vicomtech (E)

Abstract: Techniques for effective visual interaction and communication of human domain experts with AI/ML models represent a valuable contribution towards the reduction of the cost of training and towards more efficiently conveying the strategies and policies devised by automata to human experts. This talk will address visual analytics in both Exploratory Data Analysis and in operations, outlining the motivations and context of the domain, a decomposition in terms of functional blocks and transformations, data abstraction and visual encoding considerations, specific techniques such as high-information graphics, an introduction to how to conceive and plan for interaction, observations on multiple coordinated views, and evaluation and validation methodologies, drawing from the literature and from a number of laboratory and real-world cases.

Short bio: Marco Quartulli received the laurea degree in physics from the University of Bari, in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree in EE and CS from the University of Siegen in 2005. He researched from 1997 to 2010 on remote sensing ground segment engineering, image analysis, archives and mining with Advanced Computer Systems, Italy. From 2000 to 2003, he was with the Image Analysis Group, Remote Sensing Technology Institute, German Aerospace Center. Since 2010, he has joined the Digital Television Department, Vicomtech, researching on big data analytics for the multimedia and the geospatial analysis domains.
