[March 10, 2021 - Francesco Cutugno] Big Data and Computational Linguistics

Speaker: Prof. Francesco Cutugno - Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II

Abstract: Modern advertising offering innovative technologies embedded in more traditional products (like cars, home appliances, mobile phones…) suggest the equation Artificial Intelligence = Spoken Dialogue Systems. This reduced vision of AI has old roots, leading to the Turing’s challenge on the “thinking machines” and its successive misinterpretations; however, at the same time, it cannot be denied that Computational Linguistics and Data Sciences, and, through it, modern Artificial Intelligence are strictly connected and relative boundaries are hard to define.Starting from the experiences collected in the last decade managing Evalita, the Italian Campaign for Computational Linguistics systems evaluation, in this talk I will propose an overview of the state of art of some research aspects linked to automatic language (whatever spoken or written) processing and comprehension, information retrieval and dialogue systems. Finally, I will show some recent scientific result acquired by my research group.

Short bio: Francesco Cutugno is associate professor in Computational Linguistics and Human Computer interaction at the university “Federico II” of Naples. He is the director of the Urban/Eco research center where he leads an interdisciplinary group of researchers having different competences (linguists, computer scientists, architects). He has been the president of Italian Association of Speech Sciences from 2013 up to 2018 and he is presently in the steering committee of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics. He leads national and international projects in the field of HCI applied to Cultural Heritage and Automatic Spoken Dialogue systems.
