Speaker: Marco Balzano - University Ca' Foscari in Venice

Abstract: Digitalization and servitization are two of the leading drivers of the radical change in business environments across several industries. The academic discussion over digital technologies and servitization strategies has historically been developed in separated streams of research. While digital transformation has been developed in the engineering and computer science areas mainly, servitization has been mainly tackled from a managerial perspective. Through a combined perspective, we aim at enhancing the academic debate on digital servitization, an under-investigated topic in the extant literature. The adaptation to the Smart Factory model in the era of the “fourth industrial revolution” allows firms to benefit from high levels of flexibility, virtualization, automation, energy management, vertical integration and traceability with respect to the production lines. Through a wider perspective, we build up a systematic procedure for exploring the “new renaissance” of business models due to digital transformation, proposing a structural assessment on the influence of digital technologies on business model innovations.
